5 easy steps to do financial planning.

Article - Sudhir Pai

Having worked with ICICI Bank, Kotak Group and Motilal Oswal Securities in the past, and interacting with many small and big clients, these are 5 steps, all successful investors follow :

1) Have a clear plan :
Remember the rule of 6P (Proper planning and preparation prevents poor performance). Correct planning cuts losses, increase financial gains and avoid the pain and panic of financial or lifestage crisis.

2) Upgrade yourself :
Atleast one hour of your day (preferably early mornings), must be set aside, to read newspapers like Economic Times, Business Standard and keep ourselves updated with what changes are happening in our society, nation and world, in terms of politics, technology, innovation, economy etc.

3) Network :
Network = Networth.

Please invest time to develop and maintain friendship with moderate minded, progressive human beings who believe in Win Win ecosystem. Ensure you also contribute in terms of helping and reaching out to them.

4) Live a simple life :
We must understand the difference between wants and needs. Take a stock of your daily and monthly expenses and regularly do smart budgeting to ensure that we are not spending on unwanted things. Do yoga and meditation . Follow a disciplined lifestyle and eat healthy food.

5) Hire a life and investment coach :
It is always better to invest some money to hire a life coach, who will guide us through happy and sad days. Even the best movie actor or sports celebrity has such life coach who help them to keep a balanced attitude toward life and career.

Artificial Intelligence is our future

Article - Sudhir Pai

Like it or hate it. But we humans will have to face Artificial Intelligence by 2030. Are we ready for it?

So - What is Artificial Intelligence?

To different people, Artificial Intelligence (AI) means different things. For some it could be self driving cars or a robot who can be a good friend to us.

Today's computers are far smarter than most of the humans in terms of memory and computational power. But the big question is whether Robots can exactly behave and think like humans in terms of emotions? Yes - says some scientists and futurists.

Deep learning even known as machine learning will allow computers or robots to learn everything by themselves. This is interesting and at times can become even scary.

Some Top Artificial Intelligence Companies :

  • Amazon
  • Google
  • Facebook
Many new players like Apex Technologies and Petuum are doing some exciting projects in Artificial Intelligence domain.

Career Opportunities :

Promising career lies ahead to those who learn Artificial Intelligence and Robotics like :
  • Algorithm specialists.
  • Artificial Intelligence scientist.
  • Robotics Process Automation.
  • And more ...
Good movies on Robotics :
  • The Terminator.
  • Bicentennial Man.
  • Short Circuit.
  • Robot
  • 2.0
  • And more ...
Books on Artificial Intelligence :
  • Life 3.0 by Max Tegmark.
  • How To Create A Mind by Ray Kurzweil.
  • Deep Learning by Aaron Courville.
  • And more ...
So - What are you waiting for?

Buy a book or google or watch an YouTube Video on above future technologies.

All the best !

What is Intuition?

When human body functions spontaneously, we call it as instinct. When the soul functions spontaneously, that is called intuition. Instinct is of the body - the gross; and intuition is of the soul - the subtle.
When you are totally awake and aware, this shift happens: from the [brain’s] left hemisphere the energy moves to the right hemisphere. The male is naturally an aggressive living being, the male is constantly in struggle – the feminine is constantly in surrender, in deep trust. Hence females have a better intuition or sixth sense.

Scientists have discovered that humans appear to have two, very different “operating systems.” (link is external)  System 1 is our quick, instinctual, and often subconscious way of operating – it is controlled by our right brain and by other parts of our brain that have been around since prehistoric times, known as the “limbic” and reptilian” parts of our brain.  System 2 is our slower, more analytical, and conscious way of operating – it is controlled by our left brain and by newer parts of our brain that have only developed since prehistoric times (also known as the “neocortex”).  Researchers have found that intuition is part of System 1, which is why it comes on so rapidly and often does not make rational sense to us.  In other words, intuitive decisions are not something that we have thought out carefully with reason, but rather choices that have arisen quickly out of instinct.
In my book, THINK LIKE A WINNER, I have briefly touched upon how our human mind can be programmed for success. In my second book, LIVE YOUR DREAMS, I have discussed, how people used their power of mind to achieve their personal and professional goals.

Intuition is challenging to define, despite the huge role it plays in our everyday lives. Steve Jobs called it, for instance, "more powerful than intellect." But however we put it into words, we all, well, intuitively know just what it is.

Pretty much everyone has experienced a gut feeling -- that unconscious reasoning that propels us to do something without telling us why or how. But the nature of intuition has long eluded us, and has inspired centuries' worth of research and inquiry in the fields of philosophy and psychology.

If you want to get in touch with your intuition, a little time alone may be the most effective way. Just as solitude can help give rise to creative thinking, it can also help us connect to our deepest inner wisdom.
Intuitive people are often introverted, according to Burnham. But whether you're an introvert or not, taking time for solitude can help you engage in deeper thought and reconnect with yourself.
"You have to be able to have a little bit of solitude; a little bit of silence," she says. "In the middle of craziness ... you can't recognize [intuition] above all of the noise of everyday life."

Young Innovator - Story of Vignesh Subrahmaniam

Age: 29
Technical area: Software
Current position: Lead scientist at GE Global Research
As a child, Subrahmaniam had an unusual combination of interests. He was interested in mathematics as well as music. While he was fond of reading books, he liked forecasting the weather and playing the veena. He grew up to become of one the youngest and finest statisticians and data scientists in the country.
Twelve years ago, when he had to decide the course of his career, his mother encouraged him to take up the field which he so passionately adored. “My mother has always believed that to really become successful, you need to do what you are passionate about,” says Subrahmaniam.
So, at that time, when people usually opted to study for a medical or engineering degree, he went to the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata.
After completing his studies in 2008, he joined the global research team at the US-based products and services firm General Electric Co., where he had interned in 2005. His forte is statistical modelling for weather forecasting to solve industrial problems.
In the early stages of his career, he developed mathematical models and algorithms that added significant value to diverse industrial applications. He worked with two more researchers to develop a new machine-learning algorithm which analysed historical weather data in the Indian subcontinent to identify regions that have similar rainfall patterns. His research led to the discovery of a new monsoon region called the Homogenous Indian Monsoon Region, which later improved monsoon forecasting over large areas of northern and eastern India. His work was published in the Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society (2009).
In 2010, Subrahmaniam invented an automated mixture analysis algorithm for identifying unknown substances based on its Raman spectra. This method was later granted a patent. “It was used by GE’s Homeland Protection business to identify unknown mixtures such as narcotics or drugs correctly,” says Subrahmaniam.
Though identification of mixtures from spectral data is a well-studied topic, Subrahmaniam developed the first ever method based on partial correlation to generate probabilities on all the identified mixture components. His work on this was published in the Journal of Applied Spectroscopy in 2010.
Over the last seven years, Subrahmaniam has been involved in creating a software system consists of self-learning algorithms, which analyse historical weather patterns at a location and predict the most repeatable patterns. It compares that information with the requirements for its clients, such as setting up a wind farm at that location, to come up with the best model to do so. The method has been adopted by GE’s wind business for setting up wind turbines.
Subrahmaniam has been involved in industry applications related to wind farming, power grids, transport and aviation.
“Over a period of time, the system that we have created has demonstrated verifiable results,” he says.
Subrahmaniam is now experimenting with deep learning, a new field in machine learning, which uses artificial neural networks to learn levels of representation and abstraction that make sense of data such as images, sound, and text, in a way the human brain learns and understands it.
“We are using new analytical models and deep learning for analysing historical weather data to increase the accuracy of our predictions,” he says. “We are also looking to use this model to expand our horizons and solve problems across various industries.”

Growth Mindset

Article : Sudhir Pai

It is said, universe began 13.82 billion years ago from a small dot which exploded as BIG BANG.

Since then, it is only growing and expanding.

Look around:
Everything from plants, fishes, trees, birds, animals and humans everything has grown from a small seed. Is'nt it?

Growth, abundance and prosperity is a natural instinct. Think Big. Aim Bigger. Don't feel guilty in doing so.

Some people may like your behaviour. Some may criticize you. Some may ignore you. Don't bother too much.

Keep your focus intact on growth and prosperity, and keep working towards it.

Best Wishes,

Mashelkar Kaka - The man passionate about watches for 40 years.

Article : Sudhir Pai

I remember going to his shop at the age of 12 when I got my first watch as a gift and in six months, there was some problem and needed to repair it urgently.

As I looked in his 50 square feet cute little shop, I was amazed by the collection of watches he had which had come for repair and the new ones he had put for sale.

This shop is located at Thakurdwar Naka as you keep walking slightly towards C.P.Tank on left hand side. The shop is in South Mumbai area. And Mashelkar Kaka (That's Uncle in English), as we fondly call him, has been passionate about discussing, repairing and selling all types of watches for last 40 years.

There is a child like twinkle in his eyes even today, as he discusses about clocks and watches. And we take his advice before buying new watches.

His only advice - Avoid Chinese watches and buy Indian ones 😊

Few days back, I had visited his shop to get my watch repaired and he repaired it in 7 minutes. And as usual shared a cup of tea and some happy moments discussing about clocks, watches and electronic gadgets.

I wish, Mashelkar Kaka keeps on following his passion of repairing watches for next 100 years ...

So Folks - Next time, if you are in South Mumbai and your watch needs repair, do visit him.

How to deal with a difficult boss?

Article - Sudhir Pai

Are you one of those, who feel that your boss is very difficult to handle? You do everything in best possible way, work really hard but your boss is never happy and many times shouts at you or insults you in front of other colleagues.

Chill. Take a cup of warm or cold coffee and keep reading below article. We are going to discuss today how to manage and deal with difficult boss?

Let's start.

Observe your boss for a few days with a neutral frame of mind. Regular meditation can help you to develop a cool and neutral mindset. Understand your boss and his or her priorities. Listen to what he or she says very carefully. Try to listen to what is unsaid.

Try to understand that your boss may be a very good person in personal life but targets and deadlines can put huge pressure on him or her and that work pressure can get transferred down on subordinates.

Art of managing boss is more often art of managing the pressure downloaded by the boss. And to manage the pressure, one needs to be in cool frame of mind. Trust me folks, regular deep breathing and meditation helps to develop this cool mind.

Documentation plays an important role in managing boss's expectations. During meetings with our superiors, make a note of everything in bulleted points. After meeting, email minutes of meeting to your boss and colleagues to ensure whole team is on same page. and get assign off from your boss. On regular intervals, send him status of work allotted with deadlines and tasks completed. This will ensure, that boss is updated on regular basis of work status. Also ask for feedback and inputs from boss about the progress of work.

Open and regular communication is the way to develop and strengthen relationship with your boss and colleagues.

I hope this article has helped you to get clarity on How to deal with difficult boss?

COBOTS - The future friendly robots

A COBOT (Co-Robot), derived from word Collaborative Robot is the future of human evolution and exciting experiences, we humans will have in near future.

Cobots were invented in 1996 by J. Edward Colgate and Michael Peshkin, who were professors at Northwestern university.

The global economy and various industries are entering a phase of renaissance. Much of more advanced technologies are still out of reach of SMEs, but COBOTs (Collaborative Robots) are seeing a noticeable spike in popularity, precisely because of their affordability and emphasis on safety.

Colgate and Peshkin were thinking and discussing on a idea where, robots and humans can collaborate with each other, work in partnership and improve overall productivity and quality of life.

With lot of research and development leading to creation of COBOTS, first introduced in factories, assembly line workers were happy to see that COBOTS are not those typically machine type looking devices, but human type looking creatures and it was actually fun working with them.

Now, picture the assembly floor of car factory staffed by COBOTS who are interacting with humans. Not only interacting with humans, they are also interacting with cars they are assembling. The future could be a customer gives a specific customized requirement and COBOTS alongwith engineers are interacting to give best possible customized solution.

Exciting Times Ahead Indeed ...

What is courage?

To accept the challenge of unknown inspite of all fear and insecurities and work towards it is courage.

Courage is the ability to come out of logic and reasoning of past experiences, challenge status quo, try out something new, something different and emerge out victorious. Courage is not the absence of fear. Infact, it is acknowledging the presence of fear, accepting fear and overcoming it.

It is infact, the ability to let go of our past experiences and venture out in the unknown. Courage is not essentially positive thinking but more of possibility thinking. Positive thinking may help to reduce fear, but possibility thinking will help us to overcome future, think of innovative solutions and ultimately emerge out as winner in life.

Courage is the self-affirmation of being inspite of the fact of non-being. It is an act of asserting our inner powers and strength over our weakness.

When I first decided to quit job and start something on my own, I had lot of fear about future, about financial burden and how I will manage my career. It took almost 5 years to fight with my fear and ultimately I quit my job and started my consultancy business.

I wrote 2 books, first one was Think Like A Winner, which has proven new age techniques of how to develop a winning mindset. and second one is Live Your Dreams, about those 10 ordinary real life people who became extra ordinary because they followed their heart and pursued their dreams.

He was unable to understand the local language but after staying there for 6 months, he realized the problems faced by villagers and children and after lot of soul searching decided to do something for them and people like them across India.

This is how his idea came into action with his unique school VILLAGE SPIRIT ACADEMY for rural kids run by rural youth where there is unique blend of tradional value with modern education.

Rahul is running this project on almost zero bank balance. He is avid movie buff, but has not seen a single movie in last 5 years.

Rahul has big plans to start such kind of schools in every remote part of India. Please google and youtube him for more details.

Farmer who became Teacher

70-year-old Keshav Saran began his career as a teacher in the Adult Education Centre of Kharadia village. Currently, 1,320 students are enrolled in the school, including 670 girls. Keshav who was a farmer was elected as the Pradhan of his village in 1988. Extremely dedicated towards the development of his village, he did not leave any stone unturned to reach officers who could help get all the amenities. However, he realized that had he been as educated as those officers, he would be able to accomplish a lot more. It became clear to him that education meant power.

He started off with five or six children but the word of mouth popularised the classes and within a span of few months, the strength of his class grew to 150. Encouraged by the response, he developed the 'chaupal' classes into a formal school, built on his 4 acres of agricultural land in 1975 which also received a junior high school recognition.
His son and daughter, both qualified teachers, were also involved in the initiative. With 21 other teaching staff members, the school received recognition of an inter college in 2009.
As a tribute to the long years of Saran's struggle and dedication, it was named Keshav Inter College.
Keshav’s son, Arun Kumar, and his daughter-in-law, Krishna, also help him run the college. The school has 21 teaching and staff members but the Sarans still charge a minimal fee to the students.
