Interesting facts about Gabbar Singh

Gabbar Singh was modelled on a real-life dacoit Gabbar Singh Gujjar who had menaced the villages around Gwalior in the 1950s. Any policeman captured by Gujjar had his ears, and nose cut off, and was released as a warning to other policemen.

Actor Amjad Ali Khan, who played the iconic role of Gabbar Singh was not the first choice for the character and was almost dropped from the film. Scriptwriter Javed Akhtar wasn’t very convinced by Amjad’s voice but later agreed to Sippy's vision and the rest is history.

Danny Denzongpa was the first choice for the character of Gabbar Singh.

The rustic language which Gabbar uses with one and all in the village, especially Basanti in that “khurach khurach ke” scene where Gabbar threatens the talkative taangewali in a rural and remote dialect gives Gabbar a separate class. He’s somewhere between a local gunda and a full fledged international don (in terms of the sophisticated terror he projects).
