Goonj - Anshu Gupta

Article - Sudhir Pai

Anshu Gupta is an Indian social entrepreneur who founded Goonj, a Delhi-based non-governmental organisation that positions under-utilised clothes from urban areas to rural areas. He won Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2015 for his genuine effort of clothing the poor via his NGO Goonj.

After completing his studies he joined corporate sector. But was completely disillusioned by the rat race and selfish attitude. He wanted to give back something to the society. So ultimately in 1998, he left Escorts as Manager, Corporate Communication in 1998 to work full time on his idea of social work.

Goonj, his dream for many years, was set up in the same year. From collecting clothes from his own house and friends and then distributing them on the roads in the chilly winter nights of Delhi, his dream has come a long way.

Under Goonj's flagship 'Cloth for Work' initiative village communities across India work on their own issues and get the urban clothes and materials as a reward for their efforts.

Anshu was quoted saying - We promote the idea of cloth-for-work where people who do work are rewarded with material. There is a sense of dignity in this.

Develop good memory

By : Sudhir Pai

Everyday our brain has opportunity to develop new cells and newer neural connections and pathways. This ability of our amazing brain to constantly renew itself and become more sharper and intelligent is called as neuroplasticity.

We must be aware and train our brain using this concept of neuroplasticity to improve our memory power as well. So how can we do it?

1) Diet plays an important role. Eat fresh fruits, walnuts, almonds.

2) Drink 1-2 cups of coffee. It helps to keep our mind alert and improve memory.

3) Walk for 45 minutes daily. It should be brisk and and at end of walk we should feel happy and light headed.

4) Affirmations can do wonders. Regularly talk to yourself and tell that you have great memory.

5) Smiling and laughing reduces stress, increases happy hormones called endorphins and thereby improves memory.

6) Solve puzzles.

7) Play Chess and Carrom.

8) Try to recall entire day event at end of day and put it in diary.
