Nobel Peace Prize 2011 - Ms. Ellen Sirleaf

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (Born 29 Oct 1938), age 79, is a Liberian politician, and Nobel Peace Prize 2011 winner. She is 24th and current President of Liberia since 2006.

Ellen is often referred as "Iron Lady of Liberia" for her strong will and political persistence, and is Africa's first democratically elected female leader. Her political path has not been an easy one and she was imprisoned in 1980's for criticizing government policies in Liberia.

In her book, This Child will be great, she writes - If asked to describe my homeland in one sentence, I may say something like this: Liberia is a wonderful, beautiful, mixed up country, struggling mightily to find itself.

Given more space, however, I would certainly elaborate.

Liberia is some 43,000 square miles of lush, well-watered land on the bulge of West Africa, a country slightly larger than the state of Ohio, a lilliputian nation with a giant history. It has a population of 3.5 million people from some sixteen ethnic groups speaking some sixteen indigenous languages plus English. It has never known hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, droughts, or other natural disasters, only the occasional flood and the more frequent havoc wreaked by man. Liberia is complicated. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, Liberia is a conundrum wrapped in complexity and stuffed inside a paradox. Then again, it was born that way.

In 2011 - She won Nobel Peace Prize for her relentless efforts to bring peace, prosperity and progress for Liberia.

Saloni Malhotra is polite, petite and soft-spoken. In fact, she looks like she might still be in college.

"It is a problem sometimes," she admits. "People in this industry are expected to have some white hair - it gives confidence to the client ! She sometimes laugh off.

Saloni Malhotra is the founder and CEO of DesiCrew, an IT enabled services company, that provide back office and support services in rural part of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

After doing engineering from Pune Universtity and working with interactive media startup Web Chutney, based out of Delhi, she came in contact with Prof. Jhunjhunwala of TeNet group, IIT Madras and came up with idea of Desi Crew.

Desi Crew started with an objective to setup rural BPO's in Tier 2 cities towns and villages, which will generate employment opportunities to backward unemployed youth in these towns and villages.

Initially, Desi Crew struggled with intial hiccups of starting a social enterprise, but today stands tall and successful giving employment to 400 plus youth in these villages of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Mashelkar Kaka - The man passionate about watches for 40 years.

I remember going to his shop at the age of 12 when I got my first watch as a gift and in six months, there was some problem and needed to repair it urgently.

As I looked in his 50 square feet cute little shop, I was amazed by the collection of watches he had which had come for repair and the new ones he had put for sale.

This shop is located at Thakurdwar Naka as you keep walking slightly towards C.P.Tank on left hand side. The shop is in South Mumbai area. And Mashelkar Kaka (That's Uncle in English), as we fondly call him, has been passionate about discussing, repairing and selling all types of watches for last 40 years.

There is a child like twinkle in his eyes even today, as he discusses about clocks and watches. And we take his advice before buying new watches.

His only advice - Avoid Chinese watches and buy Indian ones 😊

Few days back, I had visited his shop to get my watch repaired and he repaired it in 7 minutes. And as usual shared a cup of tea and some happy moments discussing about clocks, watches and electronic gadgets.

I wish, Mashelkar Kaka keeps on following his passion of repairing watches for next 100 years ...

Why Tulsi (Holy Basil) is planted at entrance of house?

As a child, I was fascinated with lot of things I observed around me. Some traditions were faith. Some were blind faith. And yet another had some scientific thinking.

I always used to wonder, why Tulsi (Holy Basil) is planted at entrance and worshipped. And I used to ask this question to lot of people and my elders and each one of them had their own version of story as they heard from their elders and friends.

But I was looking for a more scientific explantion until I met an engineer who had more interest in Ayurveda and Indian tradition and I felt his explanation was closest which answered my logical mind.

He first told me benefits of Tulsi plant and leaves which are as follows:

1) Tulsi plant emits oxygen in abundance.

2) Fights cancer.

3) Improves immunity.

4) Fights bacteria and viruses.

5) Useful in cold and cough.

Tulsi leaves can be boiled with tea and milk and drink for healthier life.

Bottom line - Tulsi plant at entrance was a reminder to take (eat tulsi leaves) daily dose of immunity before you go for outdoor work, so that you always remain immune to external harmful viruses and stay healthy.

What is Creativity?

Creativity is the quality that we bring to the activity we are doing. It is an attitude, an inner approach - how we look at things.

Whatever we do, if we do it joyfully, if we do it lovingly, it is creative. Creativity is the act of turning new and imaginative ideas into reality. Creativity is what makes us human beings unique. It is a gift to us from nature. Look around, everything we see was a result of creative thinking by human mind. Air Conditioners, Mobile Phones, Trains, Aeroplanes everything was a result of creative thinking.

Creative people develop a flexible and open mindset. Either they are born with this trait or over a period of time they develop this trait which evolves them into creative human beings.
They are not childish but child-like.

The world seems to be divided between creative and non creative people. Creativity is all about being fully alive and living courageously.

The right side of human brain is primarily responsible for creative insights. We need to regularly activate it by doing creative activities like dreaming, painting, singing, listening to music.

How To Live Cashless ?

Most urban Indians have been managing their lives with difficult-to-obtain cash since that late night prime ministerial proclamation two weeks ago.

The daily travails and the plight of the largely cash-run Indian countryside stare at you from newspaper front pages and television screens even as full-page newspaper advertisements inserted by ewallet companies urge Indians to go cashless.

Abhishant Pant, 36, a FinTech professional, has been living in a cashless state of mind for several months now.

While Indians rush to banks and ATMs to deposit/exchange no-longer-legal-tender Rs 500/Rs 1,000 bank notes and withdraw cash, Pant is chilling at home. He only had loose change amounting to Rs 546 in his 'piggy bank' when the PM declared the note ban.

"I was giving a lecture on payments at an IIT conference in February when someone asked whether it is possible to live without cash in this era of digital payments. I felt it was possible and decided to execute the idea myself," he says.

He was to travel to Singapore and felt he would not face any problems in that nation, arriving without cash in hand. Reality confronted him soon enough at Singapore's Changi airport when he hailed a taxi.

"The taxiwallah refused to take digital payment. So, I had to wait for another cab. Luckily, the third taxi I hailed agreed to do so," Abishant recalls.
Why didn't he carry some cash for an emergency?

"I intentionally didn't," he says. "When you have a safety net, your experience is not real. If I knew I had an option, I would have opted for it. I would have ended up paying in cash, which I did not want. I survived in Singapore for five days only on digital payments."

When Abhishant wrote about his experience, Cashless in Singapore and learning for India on LinkedIn, readers said it was possible to do so in Singapore, but not in India.

Visualize and Succeed

Creative visualization is a mental technique that uses the imagination to make dreams come true.
