Tawakkol Karman gained prominence in her country after 2005 in her roles as a Yemeni journalist and an advocate for a mobile phone news service denied a license in 2007.
As Yemen's multi-sided conflict grabs headlines with it's devastating human toll on life and properties, local activists continue to press for peace and democracy.
Tawakkol Karman, a winner of 2011 Nobel Peace Prize who is also know as "Mother of the Revolution" in Yemen for her positive impact as a journalist and women's rights advocate, offered hope and optimism in her war striven nation.
She started organizing and protesting for equal democratic rights for women in Yemen and slowly and steadily this movement spread across Middle East and North African nations.
Tawakkol Karman co-founded the human rights group Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC) with seven other female journalists in 2005 in order to promote human rights, particularly freesom of opinion, expression and democratic rights.
She has received numerous threats and sometimes also temptations, but she stood her ground and is working continuously for democratic rights in Yemen.
