Azim Premji transfers 8.6% shares to a charity foundation closely involved in nonprofit initiatives such as building schools, training teachers and funding other educational activities. This could possibly be the largest amount that an Indian billionaire has committed to philanthropic activities. Adi Godrej and Shiv Nadar of HCL Technologies are also ardent philanthropists but this has certainly been the biggest amount ever. Chairman of India’s third-biggest IT services exporter, Premji will transfer around 8.6% stake worth over Rs. 8, 000 crore (at current market prices) to a private trust which is managed by him. The trust will then make use of the funds to support educational causes under the ambit of the Azim Premji Foundation.
